Calm and responsible trading

What responsible trading actually means

It isn't a warning label or a reason not to trade. It's the practice of taking only the risks you chose, knowingly, on your own terms.

"Responsible trading" usually appears in small print. It sounds like a legal notice, or a polite way of saying don't. We use it differently. To us it means something practical: every risk on your account is one you chose in advance, with a clear head.

Why it matters now

Trading has never been easier to start or quicker to do. Regulators have taken notice. Germany's BaFin studied 543,000 turbo-certificate traders from 2019 to 2023 and found that 74% lost money, about €3.4 billion in total. The loss rate climbed with activity, reaching about 90% among the most active traders. Frictionless access is real progress, but it also removes the pauses that used to protect people from their worst moments.

Five principles

You set the limits

You decide what you can lose per trade, per day and per week. A number on paper protects you better than an intention.

You only risk what you can lose

Trade with money that doesn't affect rent, bills or debt repayments. Never borrow to fund a trading account or to win back a loss.

You know the product

Leverage, margin, liquidation rules, overnight costs. Learn how your product can hurt you before you find out by accident.

You can always get out

Reducing risk should never be blocked or discouraged. Any good rule set makes it easier to exit than to enter.

You check in honestly

Review regularly, and include how trading is affecting the rest of your life: your sleep, your relationships, your focus.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

  • You keep breaking limits you set yourself
  • You trade to recover losses instead of following a plan
  • You've hidden trading or losses from people close to you
  • You're using money meant for something else
  • Trading is taking over your time and attention

If several of these sound familiar, step back and talk to someone you trust. If you're worried about money or your wellbeing, a qualified professional or a local support service can help you far better than any trading content can.

The simple versionResponsible trading is deciding on a calm day what you're willing to risk, and arranging things so that a bad day can't overrule you.
